This tank is an advanced model of the Merkava Tank series. Unlike the Mk. 1 and Mk. 2, this model includes a smooth bore gun. The track and the suspension system were changed and the tank was equipped with an advanced protection and electric traverse systems, as well as with a stronger engine. Two types of advanced fire control systems were installed in it. The Mk. 3 entered service in the early 1990's, in the 188th Armored Brigade. It was operative in Operations Defensive Shield, Cast Lead and Protective Edge, as well in the Second Lebanon War.
